Saumur – Saint-Rémy-la-Varenne Val de Loire Anjou and its Heritage Wild Anjou

Logo Loire à Vélo

At the heart of the Loire Anjou Touraine Regional Nature Park, the little towns dotted along the Loire will form the stages of your route, connecting the elegant town of Saumur to Saint-Rémy-la-Varenne and its ancestral priory. As we can tell by the menhirs and other dolmens scattered throughout the region, this is an environment that was much-appreciated by our ancestors – a tradition that continued more recently, too, with an abundance of religious edifices built of ‘tuffeau’ stone. At the start or finish of your ride, lose yourself in the history and alleys of the pretty town of Saumur, the horse-riding capital!

Montsoreau - Saumur : vue Chateau 2

Saumur, City of Art and History

Known and admired worldwide for its Cadre Noir - the French elite cavalier troop, instructors at the École Nationale d'Équitation, Saumur is a town which marries elegance, heritage and gastronomy in style. Atop the slopes, its castle majestically overlooks the Loire. By bike, you can follow the riverbanks or lose yourself in towns narrow alleys; either way, it’s a pleasure. Saumur also boasts the Musée des Blindés (a collection of almost 800 assault vehicles that is unique in Europe), the Maison des Vins de Loire, with its cellars (and its famous Crémant! [a sparkling wine]), and the distilleries…

Le Thoureil and its Sailors

This village on the banks of the Loire bears signs of inhabitation since neolithic times! Le Thoureil is also a charming place, where it’s a real pleasure to stroll along the Quai des Mariniers, which is lined with beautiful homes. Observe this revitalized Loire marine from the slipway – unless you’d prefer a break in the sun, outside a café. The Abbey of Saint-Maur is another of Anjou’s emblematic building you’ll see in the course of your "ligérien" travels.

‘Ligérien’ villages ‘full of character’

As you cycle along, you’ll come across many a picturesque village! You’ll discover Chênehutte with its charming church, the gardens overhanging the Loire, the prestigious Tower of Trèves… and in Cunault, the priory church – a masterpiece of Angevin Romanesque art.
